Some times the "simplest" answer is the right one...

Japanese researcher, Atsushi Tero, and his team found that slime mold mimicked the Tokyo transportation system almost exactly when placed into a scaled adaptation of the city.  And according to the results, it had a slightly lower cost.  Pretty cool stuff.
